When you start off your build thread with a picture of a stonking great big turbo, you’re sure to grab peoples attention. The sizable huffer in question belongs to an Audi Quattro that started it’s life as a long-wheelbase model before being stripped to a bare shell, shortened, and built back up into a full-house race car. What’s with the title of the post? Well this project started out on the second floor of a garage, using a large trap door to raise/lower the car, hit the pics below to see for yourself.

When it comes to piecing together a build thread there are some people who love it (us!), and some who don’t really care too much about it. A few camera-phone images, some vague descriptions, and maybe, just maybe they’ll maintain enough enthusiasm to keep updating it until their project is finished. But hey, that’s their choice, it does take a lot of effort to put together the threads we love. Then there are people like Alex; people who enjoy putting down the tools to take that perfect shot, people who want to show you the intricate details, people who take the time to turn their thread into a story. Basically, there are people who get it, which is why I’ve created a new post tag for these types of threads. I’ve gone back and added the tag to a few older posts, and I’ll keep doing so as I remember more of them.

One very dedicated Swedish builder has been spending the last 3 years creating his own Bentley Speed 8 replica. By taking a 1:18 scale model and having it scanned in 3D, he was able to recreate the body shape in full-size and drape it over a hand fabricated tube-frame chassis. With a 4.2lt Audi V8 sitting behind the two lucky occupants, this home-made creation will surely have the performance to back up supercar looks. At the start of the thread there appears to be a twin-turbo setup in the works, but sadly it disappears later in the thread, so let’s hope it makes a return somewhere down the track. After you see the home-made CNC machine & plasma cutting table, you’ll agree with me when I say “chalk up another build to the crazy Scandinavians!”

Mike from Eurowise Inc sent me emailed me the build of their shop car, a classic Audi Coupe GT sitting on some timeless BBS rims. Love that cross-stitched interior, it’s giving me ideas for my own car.

Sorry guys, I know I’ve been down on content lately, it’s a crazy time of year. But don’t worry, I’ve still got heaps of tasty builds lined up, so keep the faith!

James, the editor of Car Throttle & owner of Saab Snaab emailed me this crazy Saab 99 build and told me a little bit about it. It’s received an updated version of its original B202T engine from a later model Saab 900, which has been rotated 180 degrees to enable it to mate to an Audi Quattro AWD drivetrain from a C4 generation Audi 100…those crazy Swedes! Just as I was writing the above paragraph I was checking out Speedhunters when I saw this article detailing Saab’s demise, what a sad coincidence.

I threw this little flyer together for Dom who’s organising the 2010 South East Dub Fest. I thought it came out pretty nice, although I’d love to do a more intricate one for another event when I have more time to spare. Any Melbournians who are interested in the VW/Audi scene should come and check it out.

While loitering around VWwatercooled, I found a link to an Audi 90 IMSA GTO replica. Quite an impressive feat by the passionate owner, no doubt about it. Check out the all-metal wide-body and custom made wheels.

This Audi ticks all the boxes on how to build a scene-approved ride in the contemporary car world; low, wide, smooth, and wheels poking out from the guards. Built purposely to be worthy of gracing the front page of a car magazine, the owner has surely meet not only his own expectations but many others along the way. I doubt it will be embraced by Audi purists or those who don’t care for the latest car fashion trends, but it seems to be popping up in picture threads on forums & blogs everywhere, so come behind the scenes and see how it was put together…
