Zakspeed MkII Escort

While it’s not uncommon to have a few of the same build type appear on this site (chassis-swap, anyone?), one style that I didn’t think I’d double up on (letalone triple!), is the Zakspeed Escort, but here we are. What I particularly like about this one is that not only does it reside in my own home town, but it’s owner, Matt, informed me that the other two Zakspeed’s featured here inspired his build. I hope I get the chance to see it in person one day.

What I’m watching – The Mongrel (MX5 – FORD 100e)

How many cars are subjected to the MX5 running-gear swap? Well, on this website alone, we’ve seen it done to a Mini Clubman Estate, a Volvo P1800, a Saab 96, a Datsun 411 wagon, a Datsun 520 ute, and now we can add a Ford 100e to that list! This project by Urchfab has seen multiple uploads coming at us in close succession (over 35 videos in 2 months!), and shows no signs of slowing down until it’s complete.

The Justang (Subaru Justy/Ford Mustang)

A few minutes ago, I don’t even know what a Subaru Justy was. But now I can tell you that it’s a small, light hatchback and would be a pretty great recipient to have the innards of a 4.6L Mustang Cobra stuffed into it. Wait…what?

Thanks to Robert for commenting on the last post and adding a link to this project. The Justang was built by Circuit Motorsports.

What I’m Watching: Gordon Murray Mk1 Escort by Retropower

When Gordon Murray contacts your restoration shop to enquire about a project car, you’d better bring your A-game. Luckily for Retropower, it looks as though A-game is the only game they know. They’ve been tasked with building the Gordon Murray a Mk1 Escort, and are bringing us along for the ride via a video series. The filming has a nice relaxed pace and you have a great opportunity to listen to the thought-process behind the build from all members of the business. Will this be the worlds most sorted and best-built Mk1 Escort when it’s complete?

Subtle Shuttle – Ford E350 4×4 build

Gregor Halenda is a man whose talents I’ve followed for many years. Long-time readers will remember the post I wrote up about Gregor’s multiple projects (with no less than 6 links to various threads) that he had a hand in, including his gorgeous home that opened my eyes to the wonders of mid century modern architecture. That post was made over two years ago, and Gregor has not been idle. Along with his busy photography schedule, he has turned his attentions to creating a capable adventure vehicle for quality family time on (and off) the open road. The base vehicle? An airport shuttle bus!

BJORNAGN – Volvo P1800 / Mazda MX5

If there’s one type of build that gets the most attention on Build-Threads.com, it’s gotta be the chassis swap. Taking the shell of one car and pairing it with the floorpan and running gear from another really gets peoples imaginations going, gives us all the feeling that anything our minds conjure up is possible.

This one combines a 1973 Volvo P1800 with the underpinnings of a 1996 Mazda Miata/MX5. Not wanting to stop there, the owner has replaced the standard Mazda 4cyl with a 302ci Ford V8 (and over 7″ of stretched wheelbase!). There’s a bit of everything in this one, and it’s one of the most detailed chassis swaps to date.

Zakspeed MkII Escort AWD

I’ve featured a few Escorts over the years, along with one other Zakspeed inspired MKII, but none of them were converted to AWD! The car uses a Ford Sierra front and rear clip welded onto the Escort’s center section to allow the AWD drivetrain to bolt up. The thread takes a retrospective view of the car’s different combinations over the years before getting to the oily bits of it’s latest rebuild in the famous Zakspeed livery. Sadly the thread has died off a couple of years ago and ends in a negative light, here’s hoping it somehow starts up again in the future.
